Age of Elaine

(2010)

Luis roams her garden through damp flowers and showered trees
Murmuring words she last heard Hawthorn sing
The crimson red and stone grey in which she is dressed
Representing sour blood pumping in her while winds spin her head
Her soles feeling the earth with heavy hearted steps
Happy as a peasant, allow the crowds their protest
Swooping in, the glowing purple night
Offering white tears and harsh moonlight

Scaling steps into a doorway arched on ascending walls
Unliving buildings of brick make her inspiration fall
With every misty breath she breathes in this corridor
Luis knows she has lost the control she fought herself for
Slightness of candles in the hallway down which she soars
Avoid and escape the shrill voices of the age before
Running her spiral staircase, slipping on the unforgiving 15th step
Not feeling marble grazed shins not even when safe in her quilted bed

Closing her eyelids to enter images of love
‘May Beltane’s Eve make haste for years to come’
Unlucky to all who take him without permission
Removing Hawthorn from growth and place it has risen
Under the first moon and growing power of May
Nature’s elements will turn an eye and allow a quick stray
In the peaceful garden Hawthorn and Luis will dance and lay under a silver moon
She awaits the seasons full turn, their purple blanket come and gone too soon

Luis wakes moving the quilt to shade light seen through closed eyes
Pausing the rest of herself as not to break the dreams of mind
Imaginary arms wrapping her up, a warm breath and a faint scent
The power of her memory keeps such important information fresh
A sexy smile and a deep kiss conjured
Only the real him would make a better moment
Lonely hope but no longer does she feel alone
She has dismissed her safety and escapes from home

Luis must live with result and effect of her own foolish acts
Hurting the ones she loved the most, then like a child turning her back
Now she has known great love those days have been severed
Even if only for one night, once a decade, she is allowed his presence
For this love she’d fight a losing battle for the rest of her days
Dark corners of this castle in which to hide helped in her first stage
The clock has chimed too many times now in Luis’s days
She can no longer hold herself in the age of Elaine.

He has taught her what is of value but more importantly who
Luis lying next to Hawthorn is no longer afraid to tell him her truth

“I felt lost all of my life until I laid with you
Running my fingers through the back of your dark hair
Your eyes closing over as you slept
I would watch that every night if I could
In the morning your heart beating as my head lay on your chest
I would listen to that every morning if I could
I love your imperfections more than your beauty that all adore
Uncommonsense ways and sweet vanity over the way you look
You talking to me about dreams you’re still half in, while half asleep
The expression brought on only by passions peak
The marks upon your skin from the lessons you’ve learnt
I am no longer going through the motions you give life worth
As far away as it seems in this darkness, my heart questions this situation, begging me to ask
Stay, I will spend any time you can give me trying to make you smile and laugh
I want to be a year from now because I love you more with every day that has been.
But already I know
I know you are too much of a burning fire not to be free”
