This painting details offshore wind turbines with coral growing up their bases and on their blades.
When I started, I wanted to celebrate that while wind turbines can damage seabeds and waters during installation, they offer benefits beyond their primary use of generating energy. They also support the creation of artificial reefs around their submerged base structure. I wanted to bring this hidden positive up above the water level.
The background was left with a simple colour tone to blur the line between being above and below the water surface. Like when you are submerged and look around and see only a turquoise haze.
The coral detailed in the painting is found in waters around the UK.
Pink Sea Fan (Eunicella verrucosa)
Dead Man’s Fingers (Alcyonium digitatum)
